With the children back at school and summer holidays over, many of us feel like our homes have been left in post-holiday chaos and need re-organising? With Autumn here, the night’s drawing in, the next big event is Christmas and let’s face it, it’s never too early to start to plan! But where do you start? Sometimes things can seem overwhelming. Whether it is that pile of shoes always being left in the hall, kitchen work tops messy with kitchen devices and utensils, struggling to keep your media and audio equipment tidy or nowhere to store your drinks.
Maybe, you’re planning to socialise with friends at home across the winter and Christmas and considering a home bar. Home bars are a growing trend and offer a great focal point for parties, family gatherings, watching sport events and playing board games and cards. Check out our tips on where to start to reorganise, plan for Christmas and the long dark evenings.
Tips for decluttering and organising your home
To organise your home, you need to declutter first. Clutter can have a real negative impact on both your physical and mental wellbeing. Everyone functions better and finds life more enjoyable without clutter. It may seem a massive task and confusing to know where to start. Here are some tips: declutter one room at a time, draft help by getting the rest of the family on board. But watch out for those hoarders you may have to supervise their decluttering. Sort everything into piles for example: what you will keep, mend, sell, donate, recycle and bin. Once in piles make sure you action straight away and don’t procrastinate over those piles. When your declutter is complete you will be left with the things to keep and now you need to work out how to organise and store them.
Kitchen storage
A well organised kitchen makes it easier to cook and clean. Now you have removed the out-of-date food jars, the dinner service you never use and your chipped mugs, you should have more space. Dependant on the size of your kitchen there may be value in dividing your kitchen into two areas; one for cooking and one for eating. Even though you have decluttered you may still need more kitchen storage. A bespoke kitchen unit built to your specific measurements can work well in an alcove or on a free wall. If you’re are struggling to store your drinks a wine rack or drinks cabinet is a great solution and can be designed to maximise the space available and matched to your existing furniture.
Under stairs storage
Under the stairs is often an unutilised area and is ideally suited to a home storage system. Bespoke storage systems can be designed to meet your needs whether it is for coats or shoes or a combination of both. It could be that you need somewhere to store you vacuum cleaner or your mop bucket. Whether it is an open space or a closed space that needs reorganising it will be a perfect area to create a storage system. Allowing you to rearrange your hall and relieve the pressure on bedroom wardrobes. As another option you could use the under stairs space to create a home workspace or build a mini bar.
