A dining table is not something you buy every day, most of us would usually use a dining table for 5 to 10 years. So, if you’re thinking of buying a new dining table but unsure what you want, we have developed a dining table guide. The guide offers some practical advice to help you choose the right table for your lifestyle, budget and room.
Size
Before you decide on a table design measure your room space so you know what size dining table will fit comfortably. Also consider how many people will usually sit at the table. Do you have a big family? Do you regularly entertain if so, something extendable may well work for you? You want your dining table and the space around it to be welcoming and comfortable so make sure there is enough room around the table so people don’t feel restricted or cramped.
Shape
The shape of your table often depends on the size of your room. Round tables are best for small rooms, rectangular tables are usually more traditional and seat the most amount of people so great if you entertain a lot. Whereas square tables are ideal if you want to eat in the kitchen. The general rule is that square and round tables suit small rooms whereas oval and rectangular tables suit larger rooms
How will you use your table?
Will your table be used for more than dining? Will it be a place for children to do their homework or maybe you work from home? It could be somewhere you play family games or do hobbies like art and crafts. Do you entertain regularly with family and friends if so, you may consider an extendable table? Having an extendable table is ideal for when you need to seat several guests but can be reduced in size for everyday use which will increase the space in your dining or kitchen area.
Style
Your home style is created by the shape, material, colour and finish of your existing furniture plus your deco and your new dining table should complement your current home style. Are you looking for something contemporary, modern, traditional or transitional which is a combination of the best features from modern and traditional designs? Unsure what your personal style is? Material
There are several materials to choose from for your new table; marble, metal glass or solid wood. Solid Wood is the most popular material for dining tables because it is ageless and never really goes out of fashion. Choose from oak, walnut or pine, whichever wood you choose each piece will have its own unique look with its different grains and knots plus, most woods tend to look better over time. Wood is durable, straight forward to repair if damaged and if it starts to look a little tired it can be easily refinished.
Chairs
Once you have chosen your table you will need to think about your chairs. It maybe they come as a set with your table or you may wish to buy them separately. A current dining décor trend is to choose chairs that contrast with your table. Maybe a leather, a fabric such as velvet, metal or for a very modern look a plastic moulded chair. Once you have decided on the material you need to consider the style either contemporary, more traditional chair or even a bench whichever fits with your table and lifestyle. At our showroom and online we have a wide range of dining chairs and benches.
